CODY MAST, D.M.D.
In July 2004, we happily welcomed a second Doctor Mast to the office family, David Cody Mast, D.M.D., generally known as Cody. For simplicity’s sake, we refer to him as “Doctor Cody,” as our senior Doctor Mast, Larry, might feel slighted to be referred to as “the older doctor,” “the shorter doctor” or “the grey-haired doctor,’ all of which are applicable. But let’s just go with Doctor Cody and Doctor Larry.
Dr. Cody was born in 1975 at Kirkland’s Evergreen Hospital, and attended Eastgate Elementary, Tyee Middle School and Newport High in Bellevue. Some of our long-time patients may remember him from 1990-1993 when he worked after school in the office, filing charts and sterilizing instruments.
Cody attended Willamette University in Salem, Oregon for college, and graduated with a German major and an economics minor. Like many other foreign language majors, he spent his junior year at Ludwig Maximilians Universität in Munich, Germany, where Cody met his wife, Kelley, a Colorado native who was also studying there. Cody also discovered that there was something missing in his choice of studies - more contact with people. He told his parents about the revelation after returning to the Northwest, coupled with his interest in dentistry. Imagine that!
You know that Dr. Cody’s father is a dentist, but you may not know his mother is a dental hygienist. Cody grew up listening to endless dental conversation at the dinner table and it never occurred to anyone in the family that he’d be interested in a healthcare career, but there it was. He spent a fifth year of study at UW to fulfill the necessary requirements for entry to dental school at Nova Southeastern University’s dental program in Davie, Florida (just north of Miami). After four years at Nova, Dr. Cody received various top honors and accolades to go with his dental degree. But wait, there’s more!
During his dental school experience, Dr. Cody discovered his joy of working with children and decided to apply for a two-year pediatric residency. (In order to specialize in children’s dental care, one must gain experience in providing care for children, ranging from infancy through adolescence, with special healthcare needs. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry must accredit this type of residency.) Dr. Cody was accepted at a highly regarded training program in pediatric dentistry - Indiana University in Indianapolis. He trained for two years caring for children at Riley Hospital for Children, a national leader in pediatric care. Patients ranged from typical normal infants and youngsters, who are treated by conventional methods, to those injured or challenged with layers of debilitating medical and/or dental conditions, thus requiring more complex treatment planning.
Cody and Kelley were happy to return to the Northwest, as they are avid skiers, campers and hikers. They have two daughters, Lucie born in 2006 and Stella born in 2009.

LAWRENCE E. MAST, D.D.S, M.S.D., P.S.
Larry Mast is a native of Phoenix, Arizona. He was a paperboy, sang in the Phoenix Boy's Choir, played trumpet in the school band, swam competitively in high school, bussed tables at the Ramada Inn and was a lifeguard during summer vacations. A graduate of the University of Arizona, he was a member of SAE fraternity and ROTC. Doctor Mast received his DDS from Baylor University in Dallas, Texas, where he met wife Carol, a Dental Hygienist.
They spent 4 years in the US Army, stationed at Landstuhl General Hospital in West Germany, where their elder son, Ryan, was born in 1970. Ryan went to Bellevue HS, studied two years at his Dad's Alma Mater in Arizona and is a graduate of the UW in International Studies. But let’s go back to the 70s, when the University of Washington had the best Pediatric Dental program in the nation. Dr. Mast, fresh from the US Army, was accepted for a two year residency in Seattle, which included training at the Children's Hospital, the UW Children's Developmental and Mental Retardation Center as well as the UW Dental School. His mentors were recognized experts in the field, Dr. David Law and Dr. Thomson Lewis, legends in the field. They wrote the book! The Atlas of Pediatric Dentistry, that is.
Doctor Mast's thesis was on the subject of then-new bonding materials that are now commonly used in all facets of dental repair. His work in preparation of thousands of teeth for his thesis study gave him a great body of experience in restoration of chipped broken kids' teeth, an unfortunate common injury in soccer, skateboard, skiing, biking, baseball outfield collision-filled childhood. Today, 95% of his patients are children with "normal" dental problems. Thousands of those kids are decay-free with the benefits of aggressive preventive programs and treatment.
Younger son Cody was born in '75 during the first year of his practice in a much smaller and quieter Bellevue. Cody graduated from Newport HS, Willamette U. in Salem, Oregon and met his wife of one year, Kelley McGrath Mast, during their junior year abroad programs while studying in Munich. He is a Magna Cum Laude D.M.D. graduate of NOVA Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine and was chief resident during his pediatric dentistry training at Riley Hospital for Children. Riley Hospital is a tertiary care center affilitated with Indiana University and Purdue University of Indiana.
The Mast family sails and skis and Dr. Mast is an instrument-rated pilot. He is an active Rotarian, with special interest in the student Foreign Exchange program. Through hosting young people in his home, he has added students from France, Norway, Germany, Uruguay, Israel and Belgium to his family.
Programs in Continuing Dental Education and activities on behalf of King County, Washington State and national Dental Societies keep him quite busy, so when you cannot reach your child's dentist on any given day, he may be meeting with policy makers or legislators, hammering out children's health issues, or learning the newest concepts in treatments for our children. If asked, "What's your mission in life?" he'd likely answer, "I am an advocate for children. They have few choices in life, and I speak on their behalf."
